Mankutimmana Kagga is DVG’s masterpiece and these lines are the most famous ones from that book! The very answer to the most asked question of all us – “how to live a meaningful and virtuous life” (ಸಾರ್ಥಕವಾಗಿ ಬದುಕುವುದು ಹೀಗೆ ?) is captured in these four lines.
Like how a grass on the foot hills of the mountains is of many uses to many beings – be so in life! Be like a jasmine flower at home. Your very presence at home should be like a jasmine fragrance. Be able to sustain and face anything that comes up in life and be like a rock - like how it withstands all that nature’s fury! Be kind and sweet to the poor and needy ones. And just be one with all (mingle with all) on this earth! –
As Rabindranath Tagore says – “Life is given to us, we earn it by giving it” - there is actually more joy in sharing and caring for others. There is lot to learn from the nature around us. The trees give delicious fruits to us – but they never ask anything in return! The cows give milk for us! The rivers flow for us (which were the only source of water in the past and even today in many parts of the world) …. In the same way one should help/sacrifice for others– and there lies the great happiness!
